It's sometimes been suggested that the Mayan culture was in touch with visitors from space, most famously by Erich Von Daniken. The theory was based on the lid of the sarcophagus of King Pacal, which appears to show a space traveller. Personally, I'm not convinced, but it makes for some fantastic imagery!
